Deck resurfacing in Racine and Kenosha.

Worn boards do not always mean starting over. They also do not tell the whole story. A&R Builders looks at the existing deck before recommending a new surface or a larger replacement.

The first decision is underneath.

Resurfacing means replacing the walking surface while keeping suitable parts of the existing structure. Before settling on that scope, we look at the framing, supports, connections, and the condition of the deck as a whole.

New boards cannot resolve a failing structure. If the existing framing needs repairs or changes for the selected decking, that work needs to be part of the discussion. Concealed damage may become clearer after the old boards are removed.

What a resurfacing scope can include.

  • Removal and disposal of the existing deck boards.
  • Review of the exposed framing and agreed repairs.
  • Wood or composite replacement decking and the appropriate fastening approach.
  • Separate decisions about borders, fascia, stair surfaces, and railings.
  • Cleanup of the work area.

Those items are confirmed for your project. Board replacement does not automatically include rebuilding stairs, replacing railings, or covering the fascia. A clear written scope keeps those choices visible.

For our Racine composite resurfacing project, the scope centered on replacing the old boards with Trex Enhance Basics in Clam Shell. The finished photos show the new gray surface around an outdoor dining area.

For a broader update, our wood-to-composite transformation shows changes to the surface, railings, and stair finishes together.

Keep the layout, or change it?

If the deck is the right size and the stairs are in the right place, resurfacing may be worth exploring. If you need more space, a different height, or major structural work, a replacement plan may fit better. We discuss those options after seeing the deck.

What should you send us?

Include your town, approximate deck dimensions, a full view of the deck, close-ups of worn areas, and photos of the framing where safely accessible. Tell us whether you want to keep the railings and stairs. You can explore surface colors in Deck Studio before sending an inquiry.
